Buy in the Highlands and it won’t be long before you feel right at home—not just in your house, but within the community. That’s because the convenience factor of being able to walk everywhere and the interconnectedness between neighbors and local shop owners makes you feel welcome everywhere you go.

The Highlands neighborhood offers no shortage of ways to connect with your neighbors, from weekly wine tastings at Mondo Vino, to sampling a collection of worldly cheeses curated by John, the owner at St. Killian’s. After a while, you’ll be on a first-name basis with Bruce, the fishmonger at Seafood Landing, arguably the freshest catch in town. Local’s tip: their fresh-ground hamburger patties rival their seafood.

The locally owned establishments go on and on, from favorite neighborhood restaurants like el Camino, Sushi Hai, Cork and Coffee, and Meade St. Station, to boutique shops like Dragon Fly, Perfect Pedal, and West Side Books. And let’s not overlook Sweet Cow Ice Cream, which is quite difficult considering the constant stream of people spilling out the door, in all months.

Best of all, it’s all walkable from home, which means the neighbors are always out, many with their kids and dogs, strolling the summer farmer’s markets, enjoying the Harvest Festival every Halloween, walking to a sweat session at Core Power Yoga, Pure Barre and Orange Theory (all just blocks from one another), or headed out for a jog around Sloan’s Lake, less than a mile away.

The only thing that rivals the eclectic connection of people, places, and things you’ll find in the Highlands are the homes themselves. On one block alone you’ll pass everything from Victorian gems to contemporary masterpieces, adorable bungalows, and sprawling new-builds. But what creates cohesiveness between all of them is the community they belong to—one that brings them together in ways no other neighborhood can.
